No regrets in my choice

Updated: Jun 1

When my child was little, he was nonverbal.

Like so many autism parents, I felt overwhelmed. Opinions, recommendations, therapies, and pressure came from every direction. It was a lot to handle. But I kept returning to one simple question:

What Would Make My Child Happiest?

For me, the answer was clear: communication. Not necessarily speech, but communication in any form. I wanted my child to express his basic wants and needs. I wanted him to have a voice, whatever that looked like. Most importantly, I wanted him to feel understood.

So, I committed to speech therapy alongside ABA therapy. It was a journey filled with ups and downs. Somewhere along the way, the cosmos sent us the most incredible Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). We clicked immediately. From the start, we were on the same page. And honestly, when we weren’t, I learned I needed to get on her page because she truly understood my child.

The Journey of Therapy

At one point, my child had ABA therapy plus three in-home speech sessions every single week. It was intense, but I believed in the process. The criticism? Endless. People questioned why I wasn’t adding Occupational Therapy (OT). They asked why not floor time or this therapy or that program. It was exhausting, to say the least.

But I stayed focused on my child instead of the noise. I learned to trust my instincts. I am not saying every family should make the same choices we did. Autism is not one-size-fits-all. Every child is different, and what works for one may not work for another.

Trusting Your Instincts

This was the right choice for my child. I have not one regret. My child was not expected to ever speak. Fast forward to today, and I’m constantly telling him to be quiet for five seconds. And honestly? It’s the most beautiful sound in the world.

More importantly, he is happy. Truly happy. At the end of the day, that was always the goal.

Building a Supportive Environment

Creating a supportive environment is crucial. Surround yourself with people who understand your journey. Seek out resources that resonate with you and your family. Whether it’s local support groups or online communities, find your tribe. They can offer valuable insights and encouragement.

Embracing Communication

Communication can take many forms. It might be through words, gestures, or even pictures. The key is to find what works best for your child. Encourage them to express themselves in whatever way feels comfortable. Celebrate every small victory. Each step forward is a testament to their progress.

The Power of Connection

Connection is vital. When your child feels connected to you, they are more likely to open up. Spend quality time together. Engage in activities they enjoy. This not only strengthens your bond but also fosters an environment where they feel safe to communicate.

Celebrating Progress

Every milestone, no matter how small, deserves to be celebrated. Did your child use a new word? Did they point to what they wanted? These moments are significant. Acknowledge them and share your joy with your child. This positive reinforcement encourages them to keep trying.

Seeking Professional Guidance

Don’t hesitate to seek professional guidance. Therapists, educators, and specialists can provide tailored strategies that meet your child’s unique needs. They can help you navigate the complexities of autism and offer support along the way.

Finding Resources

There are many resources available to families navigating an autism diagnosis. Websites, books, and local organizations can provide valuable information. One resource I found particularly helpful was Katie's Kids Advocacy. They empower families by providing comprehensive, empathetic guidance and support. This has helped us confidently access the best resources and build a strong foundation for our child's future.

Conclusion

In the end, remember that you are not alone. Many families share similar experiences and challenges. Embrace your journey, trust your instincts, and celebrate your child's unique path. The love and support you provide will make all the difference. Together, we can navigate this beautiful, complex world of autism.
